A Day of History, Exploration, and Connection in Sacramento

From the moment they arrived in Sacramento, Oakwood’s 6th-grade students were immersed in a day full of discovery, history, and hands-on learning.

After landing in California’s state capital, students jumped right into their first stop: the State Capitol Building. There, they had the opportunity to meet Assemblymember Jessica Caloza, the first Filipina elected to the State Legislature. Representing the 52nd District, which includes South Glendale, East Los Angeles, and Northeast Los Angeles, she shared her journey into public service.

From there, the day continued outdoors with lunch outside Sutter’s Fort. Sitting where early California history unfolded, students then explored the fort in small groups, connecting their classroom learning to the real spaces around them. The past came to life as they walked through rooms and imagined what daily life looked like during California’s early days.

In the afternoon, students made their way to the California State Railroad Museum, where they climbed aboard exhibits and discovered how railroads helped shape the state. A favorite moment of the day? A horse-drawn carriage ride through Old Town Sacramento. This was an experience that felt like stepping back in time and offered a whole new perspective on the historic streets.

To round out the day, students visited the Sacramento History Museum, enjoying hands-on activities like gold panning and trying out a traditional print shop. These interactive moments added an extra layer of excitement, giving students a chance to experience history rather than just learn about it.

After a full and memorable day, the group gathered for dinner before heading to the airport and making their way home.
