The Da Vinci Lab & Classroom Complex

Below are some frequently asked questions about this project…
How will the Da Vinci Lab activities integrate and connect with other elementary and K-12 programs?
Every elementary campus grade level will utilize the Da Vinci Lab as part of its core programs of study. Connections between classroom learning and lab activities will be fundamental across subject areas. Taking inspiration from STEAM, Makerspace, and Design-Thinking curricula, Da Vinci Lab activities will be interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven, and project-based. We also look forward to partnering with the secondary campus programs, such as STEAM, where appropriate, to enrich the experiences of the elementary campus students.
What resources and technologies will be housed in the Da Vinci Lab?
True to our philosophy, Oakwood is taking a student-centered approach to introducing technology and resources into the Da Vinci Lab. Our intention is to grow into the space and introduce new equipment and features over time, in response to the needs of our teachers and learners. Initial plans for the space include 3D printers, air compressors, and dust collection systems for woodworking, video projectors, smart boards, as well as an assortment of hand tools and materials for building and fabrication. The Da Vinci Lab itself is designed to engage the students’ imagination with open space, easy indoor/outdoor access, high ceilings, and exposed mechanical infrastructure.
Are there any notable new features within the new 4th-grade classrooms?
The new 4th-grade classrooms will be bigger, approximately 20% larger than the previous space, brighter, and equipped with the latest technology. These classrooms will also contain all new furniture, smartboards, more energy-efficient lighting and mechanical systems, and lots of natural light from the large windows. The second-floor balcony can be used as an outdoor learning and performance space.
Will the current Explorations programs continue after the Da Vinci Lab opens?
After the lab opens, the current Explorations program will be incorporated into the Da Vinci Lab curriculum.
Will Da Vinci Lab construction disrupt campus life during the fall and winter of 2025?
Oakwood is making every possible effort to minimize the impact of construction on the daily lives of students and teachers. During construction, 4th-grade classes will be located in the Music Studio classrooms, with Music classes being relocated to the Community Room. Additionally, some parent/guardian gatherings that typically took place in the Community Room will be temporarily relocated to the secondary campus.

What steps are being taken to maintain the safety of students and others during construction?
A protective tunnel has been installed along the main walkway in front of the construction site, which is completely fenced off to ensure students are kept a safe distance from the work area. Construction workers are only accessing the site through their own dedicated entrances, and all construction deliveries are being made outside of school hours.
When will the Da Vinci Lab & Classroom Complex open?
The Da Vinci Lab & Classroom Complex is currently scheduled to open at the end of 2025.
How is the Da Vinci Lab & Classroom Complex being funded?
This project is made possible thanks to the generosity of donors from Oakwood’s community of parents & guardians, alumni, grandparents, faculty & staff, and friends, as well as allocations from the operations budget. To learn more about our fundraising goals and how you can contribute to this and other transformational campus projects, please contact Director of Advancement, Nancy Leptuch Virrey.
