First Look at The Oakwood School OWL!
Oakwood alumnus Zach Suchin ’02 and his firm Brand Knew lead the mascot design process. Below, he shares more about his inspiration and hidden forms that make up our new Owl:
“I was genuinely thrilled to lend my company’s services towards defining the iconography of Oakwood’s next generation of school spirit. After dozens of discussions with stakeholders from throughout the community, we offered an Oakwood Owl that might not serve any individual constituent perfectly but serves the entire community well. Its anatomy offers subtle nods to the institution—the perfectly round head as an O, and a W proudly adorning the chest. The seven shadow peaks that provide depth to the torso, represent the decades the school has under its wings as we introduce our new mascot. Oakwood gold is employed in the eyes and talons, a color well suited to represent the trophies the athletic department will collect in sports. And some people have noted the smiling faces of children nestled in the Owl’s plumage. A worthy heir to the school’s inclusive legacy, I think the Oakwood Owl will serve as a capable steward of our community nest.”
Huge thanks to Zach, our New Mascot Task Force, and all the students, teachers, alumni, families, and friends who contributed so much creativity and passion to this project. We can’t wait to see the Owl all around campus, across the city, and the world.
