This past weekend, our Champion Varsity Girls Basketball Team offered another example of why we revere them on and off the court. Several of the team members volunteered Sunday at “Create the Change Day,” sponsored by Project Giving Kids (PGK) and hosted by the Kidspace Museum. Leading up to the event, the team hosted a toiletries drive with support from the Parent Org and donated the supplies to LA Family Housing for children and families to assemble toiletry kits at the event to donate in the fight against homelessness. They also helped kids assemble lunches in the Do Good Bus during the event. They are the first among Athletics in a new community engagement initiative to have each team work together to provide ongoing support toward a need or cause in the community for which they would like to make an impact. As one of the players, Galit, reflected, “It was so great to bond with the team while helping out others! We got to connect with each other on a different level by having a new experience. It is great that we can support a cause as a team because not only are we, as individuals, learning more about it, but we can help other athletes and teams learn about it too.”
Our basketball team plans to continue their community work with LA Family Housing and their efforts against homelessness and poverty. We are beyond proud of the team for the example they are setting as scholar-athletes and as engaged citizens. Thank you to Tara Jones and Coach Angel Hardy for supporting our mission “to cultivate depth of character…foster a sense of responsibility and humility, along with a habit of service.”
