“Times Like These”

On Thursday, October 26 and Friday, October 27 the fifth grade class at Oakwood School is on their annual overnight trip to Saint Andrew’s Abbey, a Benedictine monastery of the Congregation of the Annunciation located in the Mojave Desert, north of Los Angeles. An extension of their classroom studies of world religion and history, this trip is an opportunity for students to witness first-hand the lifestyle of monks who live according to vows that date back to medieval times.

After a day spent hiking in the high desert, gathering around the abbey pond for personal reflection, and an incredible communal meal prepared by the monks, our students gave thanks to their hosts with a performance of music and dance.
