Mariama Richards is charged with supporting professional development, monitoring the scope and sequence of the curriculum, and supervising equity and justice initiatives at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City, where she serves as the Director of Progressive and Multicultural Education.
As a member of the senior administrative team, Mariama works to ensure that the mission of the school remains a central consideration throughout. She has worked on issues of educational equity for the past seventeen years in independent and public schools. She also works with several environmental organizations in their pursuit of crafting inclusive community-based programs.
On Thursday, January 14, Ms. Richards led an engaging discussion on racial awareness, diversity, and equity. The talk centered on the strategies and motivations—as well as the lessons learned—behind her school’s establishment of race-based affinity groups in grades 3-5.
